I've read to do both: give 24/7 access to fresh water and others say to only give access to water like once a week. My tiger salamander has done great with tubberwares at all times for the last 3-4 years. No infections or illness. But I'm concerned because he had begun spilling his water. I don't know how he manages to get almost all his water out of the dish (it's level with the substrate) but I am 90% sure it is him and not a leak. I even replaced his water dish with a new one and he it again the next night, water logging his cage and forcing me to clean it. Is this a normal behavior?

Also I'm pretty sure nipper is a female but I call him a he because I was the only male in my home when I got him. So if he is a female could it be breeding behavior? I've never seen it but I picture that he spills it by getting in his water dish and swimming like crazy or something. Could a blue light for fish tanks trigger this? I turn it on occasionally.

I would make a divider and have 90% land and 10% water, so she doesn't kick water out

I personally think that would be a waste or money, time and space.
I would just continue using plastic tubs for a water area, and refill the water as needed. A small volume of water should be replaced very frequently anyway.

I know it needs to be replaced, but the problem is that overnight all the water is gone and the substrate is soaked. I need more tubs anyway so I'm going to buy more and HOPE that it was a coincidence and they both had leaks somehow. But I doubt that it's leaks.

If it's only one area of the substrate it shouldn't be a problem, I wouldn't worry too much about it

I may make a test run of this in a second vivarium. What would I so just get glass and use silicon?

The enclosure is like 10 gals so it soaks all the way through after like two times. And that's with fairly deep substrate

A water dish will be fine. Aaron is correct. Semi aquatic set ups can make your tiger sick. All he needs is a dish of water. Keep that water in the enclosure but change it at least every other day. I got my tiger one that is large enough to fit him length wise and just deep enough that he can completely submerge if he chooses. That large if dish is not necessary though. :) As long as they are able to lay in it, it is fine. They are land dwellers and only go to water for breeding. Though some may seem to like swimming the health risks aren't worth it.

Bet you all dollars to donuts the issue is a wicking effect caused by nocturnally active tigers mounding substrate against the dish while attempting to burrow.

My advice, place a sponge (cut to the interior size) in the dish and keep it moist. This will also keep your live food items from falling in and drowning.

Remember tigers are terrestrial for the bulk of their life after metamorphosis and most of that is spent underground.

I'm thinking of setting of a night camera for her... Would be fun and I can see how exactly the water is spilt.
