I'm curious if anybody has ever found a scientific publication (or other reliable source) that elucidated the chemical composition of the toxins that Ambystoma tigrinum (and other members of its genus) secrete when they're threatened? I was thinking about this the other day and was surprised when I couldn't find any answers in the literature. I'm interested to see how analogous it is to the fire salamander toxins (which have been studied in detail); considering their geographic and phylogenic distance from one another I'd expect them to have quite a different composition from one another. But I am also wondering if compounds like samandarin are present, albeit in much lower concentrations (reflecting the fire salamander's much higher toxicity). Anybody have further insights into this?
