I'd like some of the colored sand that I've seen but I have not bought it as I want to make sure that it is safe for axies.

I have seen some on line that state that it is "epoxy coated" and also another kind that says it's "colored by Wilmar". I reallyreallyREALLY want a pretty color, but I don't want to make my axies sick.

Has anyone had any experience with sand colored like this? Thanks a bunch! :D

Epoxy coated should be ok.
Use the search fuction for 'epoxy'

Another member was looking into colored sand for her tank and mentioned Crayola - may want to check that.

Thanks ~ I saw the Crayola post, but wasn't sure if it was 'aquarium safe'. Searching epoxy now...Thanks again ~ :D

Hi,

I am not sure if it is safe for axies but I saw the crayola sand in walmart today. I live in NY but I'm guessing every walmart should carry it, plus it comes in tons of colors.

I'm also in NY. :D I think I'll call Crayola tomorrow (if I can get the number off line...) and see what they say. You have to think that they make it safe for 'human' consumption, but I wonder what their reaction will be to my question! lol~!

**I sent an email through their website...says should have a response within 2 days...

Yeah the colored sand is safe for fish and also axolotls , i have black sand in my tank and it has caused no harm to the axolotls, I would think using sand with baby axolotls could cause impaction problems similar to gravel with adult axolotls.

In general, if it's sold as aquarium sand it has to be aquarium-safe. What is the SIZE of the sand particles, though. Not all aquarium sand is safe for axies due to the ingestion risk.

haha, still looking for hot pink sand in the US. lol
Please update when you hear back from crayola, im crossing my fingers!!:)

Hi ,

The coloured sand sounds good
Does anyone know if you can get in Australia?

Thanks

Crayola will tell you that their sand is not tested on animals.
And although its safe for children there are no guarentees.

Some people on another forum use them for their fish tanks.
Do a google search 'crayola sand fish tanks' you'll see.

Slimer: Noooo! I wouldn't even think of using a substrate for the babies! I've got them bare bottomed and they are all healthy and doing great! :D ;)

Durbimac: Not sure if there is a Pet Supplies Plus store near you, but where I'm at (in western NY) they said they have a variety of colors available in the sand...the girl mentioned dark blue, light blue, coral color and 'others'. I'm going to go check it out next week to see exactly what it is when I get my cast off. (had foot surgery...counting down the days until Tuesday the 27th!!! :D)

Mel: Makes sense! That's the 'safe' answer for Crayola to give...basically, if anything happens to your fish, don't call us! lol~!

oooh okay! sounds like ill do a little google search of the store.
:)

I went to Pet Supplies Plus last night  ~ couldn't wait...

SO! They have really nice, fine grain sand in dark (navy) blue and tan/beige. They also have white and black, but the pieces were like 3 times the size of the blue and tan. (which I thought was odd ) Ya, they had a TON of colors in the gravel, but only the 4 in the sand. ...I really liked the looks of the blue! :D

I have the bit from Crayola in my notes from the "Substrates" articles on Caudata Culture. It is not caudate friendly. They use a calcium carbonate sand and dye it with all sorts of unpronounceable things.

The Clifford Estes company is pretty much the go-to company for "oddly" colored anything. they specialize in aquarium gravel however, most all of which is not caudate (especially axolotl) friendly. their "Coral 06511" is pink, but I suspect not the pink you are looking for. The rest of their pink products are a caudate gastrointestinal impaction hazard.

You may want to have a go at the Caudata Culture Articles on the subject as part of your search.

May I suggest the cheap, simple and in my opinion most axolotls friendly choice? I vote you skip the substrate altogether and paint the exterior bottom of the glass with the color of your choosing. Your color will show in the tank at no risk to your pets, and ultra-easy to keep clean!

OMGosh!~ I NEVER thought of that! That's pretty brilliant! :D

Thanks so much for the links! <---- SludgeMunkey smilie! :p
