I have had a 50 gal axolotl tank with two axolotls in it. for a while now, and the water was cloudy at first assumingly from the sand, it slowly got better but it is still cloudy after all this time, what could be causing this, I have an internal filter with a spray bar, and I have tried air stones, nothing seems to help

How much and how often do you do water changes? Have you checked to see to make sure the cloudiness isn't on the glass?I once thought I needed more water changes, then I remembered I hadn't scrubbed the tank walls in a while. Also, how many gallons per hour does your filter move?

I'm cleaned the outside glass and scrubbed the inside glass, maybe I need to scrub harder? I do regular water changes once a week and syphon out the poo whenever I see it. I'm not new to fish keeping I have 7 tanks at the moment. The filter moves up to 171 gallons per hour.

What are you feeding?

I had cloudy water problems when I first had my tanks set up when I was feeding pellets. I had lots of sponge filters, so no ammonia or nitrite. Once I got a canister filter, the cloudiness went right away. My guess is that it was bacteria in the water.

Check ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels. That can cause clouding. I set up and cycled a tank for my baby axolotls with a canister filter. My tank water turned cloudy ( I was doing bi weekly water changes cleaning out poo and leftover food twice a day) I did a complete test ammonia and nitrite levels where too high. The samething happened to my mothers fish tank that had been running for 6 months( testing showed less than ammonia 0 nitrites.5). We were both reccomended to reduce light and increase water changes until the couldiness goes away. We were told the reason was an incomplete nitrogen cycle was causing free floating algea that was making the water cloudy.Hope this helps.
