Cloudy eyes

One of my T. karelinii has cloudy eye(s). It is only noticeable in good light however. The newt appears active and hungry otherwise. 10 gallon tank with 4 other juveniles in with him/her. The tank is planted with lots of java moss and they were recently moved to this tank. Dunno if it matters but I did a 50% waterchange yesterday. The group has been fed mainly on a diet of home grown redworms.

I've looked through old threads and some mention vitamin deficiency and infection as possibilities.

Any suggestions?

If both eyes of the same animal are cloudy, it's unlikely to be infection and more likely to be a dietary issue or shedding issue. Some of my karelinii got cloudy eyes once, but I was feeding them a diet with a lot of waxworms at that time. So I blamed the excess fat they were getting. I'm doubt this would be a problem with earthworms; they are high in fat though so maybe it's possible.

The other suggestion is the animal is due to shed. Sometimes the eyes get slightly murky before shedding.

I will take a better look tomorrow to see if it is indeed both eyes.

Would, say, bloodworms be a good "low fat" food to try?

I would think if it was diet then all/many animals would be affected.

Ok, both eyes on this one are cloudy. Its been one day so I don't think it is shedding(they don't shed the eyelids like snakes do they?).

Let me dredge this up for the depths and mention that the karelinii I am helping my school raise are also suffering from this problem. My suspicions is that it is a water quality issue. However. Probably half of them have cloudy eyes. Again-it is not really noticeable.

What are they being fed? I had a group of T. karelinii with cloudy eyes, but I was feeding them a lot of waxworms. When I stopped the waxworms they cleared up.

Hello Jenn,

Mainly frozen bloodworms and newt bites. I have encouraged them to switch over to redworms.
