My young, fully aquatic marbled newt has got a slightly cloudy eye which doesn't seem to be getting better. It might even be getting a bit worse.
Water quality shouldn't be an issue.

I have searched the forum and found this thread among others:
http://www.caudata.org/forum/f46-be...help/62223-cynops-pyrrhogaster-white-eye.html
His eye isn't as bad (yet?) but it looks similar.
The described treatment seems pretty straight forward and I would like to try it but I can't buy Triple sulfa in the UK and there doesn't seem to be an equivalent.

I can buy Melafix here Melafix® - API and a lot of other fish medications.
This is a website that sell a lot of different stuff: http://www.seapets.co.uk/products/a...-treatments/tropical/tropical-fish-medicines/
I also have some Methylene blue.

Does anyone know if any of this stuff is safe and would help? Or what else?
Thanks for your help!

...something more about the water, not completely true that there is no issue:
I have high nitrates in tap water so I started adding Seachem Prime a while ago. I will do a test later and post the readings but until now there is always low (close to zero) ammonia and nitrites and nitrates about 30 mg/l.

Hello,

I would advise getting the newt to a vet. That way it can bet properly assessed so the problem has the best chance of being diagnosed and treated, Trying more or less random treatments without proper assessment of the problem is likely to be harmful rather than beneficial to your newt.

Hope you can get him sorted out.

Bruce.

Thanks, Bruce. I will wait for a bit to see how it develops because it is barely noticeable at the moment and I'm still hoping it will disappear, maybe when he sheds skin.
I'm not sure if I'll be able to find a vet because my local "herp specialist" proved completely incompetent with my tortoise and I'm sure he's the only one around.

Just an update - the eye was kind of cloudy one day and ok the next and it went on like this for a while. I stopped using Seachem Prime as it was the only thing I could think of changing. The newt's eye has completely cleared up since then. I have no idea if it had anything to do with the water treatment or not. I want to use it because it's supposed to help with the higher levels of nitrates I have. I think I might try using it again and observe the newt closely to establish if it was connected or not... if anyone has any thoughts on this please let me know.
