Which is easier to clean? sand or large stones?
I imagine when the Axolotl's poo on sand it is easy to grab with a turkey baster, but with stones it could fall down to the bottom of the tank and foul the water.

Sand made my water cloudy so I would pour the water in slowly as to not disturb the sand very much. I'm sure with large stones some food types and poo can get caught in between. But personally slate tiles work the best for me. Mine are cut into 3 pieces and I just use a butter knife (axolotls removed from tank of course) between the cracks of the tile and lift them up and use an aquarium sponge to clean it and rinse it and back into the tank! Makes my life so much easier!

I find fine sand very easy to keep clean and I haven't had much issues with cloudiness or anything. Only thing you have to remember is to stir the sand regularly to avoid anaerobic bacteria.

Large stones are a real pain to clean between, sand is easier to keep clean, but there are other options: siliconed down sand or stones, large slates, astroturf, bare bottom. The only real big no-no is gravel or small stones.
