Hi I own 2 healthy Chinese fire belly newts and read online that people keep there Nerite snails to keep the Algae levels down in the tank and are small and don't annoy the newts. Also I read about Apple snails ?!?
I want to get a snail purely because I think they make a cool addition to the tank.
An apple snail would be nice and so would a nerite. I was just checking to make sure this info is true and that it's not going to effect my newts if I do get a snail
Thank you

I have snails in nearly all of my tanks. There's Greater pond snails, Ramshorns bladder snails and trumpet snails. Most of the newts just ignore them, but the Tylototriton eat them.
I'm not so sure about the apple snails, I'd say don't bother because they have a hard trapdoor type shell that might manage to injure a small newt like H. orientalis. Also, if the snail dies, the empty shell is big enough to be a trapping hazard.

Thank you for the reply I'm going to go for a Nerite snail! Since they don't breed and in my tank ther isn't a lot of algae so I'm only going to get one.
However they lay white eggs that don't watch, will My newts eat the eggs?

I'm not sure, I haven't seen any of my newts eating snail eggs. Sometimes they eat the tiny hatchling snails that come out of the eggs, but there wont be any of those in your tank.
