Chinese Fire Bellied Newt?

About 2 1/2 years ago I received a chinese fire-bellied newt as a christmas gift they gave me a small tank and newt feeding pellets. He refused to eat for over a year I couldn't believe he lived for a whole year. I talked to someone at a pet store a 1 1/2 about basic care (the person who gave him to me had no idea how to care for it). They told me to feed him pinhead crickets which I have been doing, he loves them. My first question is is that what I should be feeding him? My other question is after looking at pictures of chinese fire bellied newts, I've come to the conclusion that my newt doesn't look like they do. He is black about 2" long and has the orange fire bellied look on his underbelly but he doesn't have the same kind of tail..his tail is jus strait and black he is no "fins" on it. Is it jus that he is little or is he something different than what my friend said he was? Also I have had him for 2 1/2 years now and he hasn't grown any, is that normal? Thank for your help, Becky

Hi!

Sounds normal to me since the little guy hasn't eaten for a year!!! Pretty sure (even tho no pic), that he is a CFB. Try frozen bloodworms. Bet he will LOVE them. (Thaw and rinse before feeding.)

He might just start growing for you now. Let us know in time. Thanks.

Thanks for the help. I tried giving him bloodworms that the pet store had but he didnt want anything to do with them unless I made them "move" and that was really really time consuming. I also tried giving him cut up small earthworms and he liked them since they moved by themselves. If anyone has anymore advice to offer me it would be great I dont know much about newts and how to raise them. Thanks Much!!

Try some live Daphnia or Brine Shrimp.
Mine love them, and they move very well!

Where would I get something like that? I checked at 2 pet stores near where I live and all they have are frozen foods. Are they the same? We have a pet supply warehouse about 30 minutes away, would it be more likely that they would have it would I need to go somewhere else? Thanks for the help

Oh I also have another question after reading several of the posts on this site and several articles about CFB- It says that CFB like water around 8 in high, throughout the 2 years I have owned him I have experimented with water levels because he never seemed to like going in the water. I only have about 1 1/2 in of water in his tank now because he usually will go in and then come right back out or else he will sit in the most shallow part of the water for about 3-4 minutes and then come back out. He loves to climb on things (I have several rocks and moss in his tank for climbing and he likes to climb on the tank walls) but he doesnt seem to like thewater. Is that normal or okay for him not to go in the water? (oh by the way the water temp is about 70F) Once again thank for the help!
