My brown algae problem has gotten so bad recently, so I bought a pair of gold algae eaters (aka chinese algae eaters). They are around 4" long but grow past 6". Are they safe with axolotls?
Ah well, I decided to stick the axies in the fridge, and keep them in there for a couple days. While theyre in the fridge, I'll have the algae eaters in the tank, then move them to my community tank. I specifically asked the pet shop guy if they were aggressive or not :/ he said no, grr i hate them.
Chinese algae eaters are not that agressive as juveniles however they are very aggressive as adults.
But Alex is correct, with algae eaters, regardless of how agressive they are, they will still feed on the slime of fish and axolotls and unlike in the wild, the animals cannot avoid the algae eaters.....
The pet shop returned them though, thankfully. Although, not after my axie got a parasite (i'm think, as someone else on this site recently had the exact same problem). Next time I'll research before I buy! I'm beginning to think that no fish at all is best, regardless of algae, except little white cloud mountain minnows that I use as a second food source. I bought little "algae blocks" hopefully that'll help.
Skylar, do you breed the white clouds yourself or do you obtain them from a pet shop. If you do get them from a pet shop they could be the source of the parasite.
Breed them myself - I got six about 4 years ago and theyve expanded into 40ish now (got 10 in the axie tank, rest in a pond outside). The frogs in the pond eat most of the fry. They breed twice a yr usually!
