Hello, I'm looking into buying a chiller to keep my little guy cool for summer. Does anyone know if you can connect a chiller to an internal filter or do I have to buy an external canister filter too ?

Also, if I do replace the filter, what is likely to happen with water parameters etc ?

Not sure about the whole filter chiller setup questions however if you do buy another filter you will start the cycling process again, but it will be sped up if you keep your substrate, ornaments and water, because a lot of bacteria live in here. It will probably take anywhere from a week to a fortnight to get all the levels back to 'normal'

You will need to get a pump for the chiller if you have a internal filter. I think you will need a chiller this summer, me thinks it is going to be a long hot summer :(. Having a chiller takes the stress out of owning axies

Agreed.
Also, if you add in the media from your internal to the Canister, the process goes much more quickly :) I've got an AquaOne Nautillius and Resun chiller, and so far so good in terms of temperature. And suggestion for setting up, ensure that the intake is at the opposite end of the tank to the outlet, that way the entire tank is going to be cooled and not just a small part of it :)

I just bought a chiller and yes, you need a pump for it. When you do buy it, make sure it comes from somewhere in Australia, not overseas.

A chiller works like a fridge- the heat is exchanged out using pressure and a heat sink which facilitates the heat dispersing into the air outside what is being cooled. Mine's about 45cm tall, 25cm square, and the canister's about the same :). Make sure you shop around- they are a really big ticket item (Mine was on special at $300) and shops are aware that it's something you'll probably only buy once, so they'll be eager to make sure they get your business!

Thanks for all the helpful answers.

Leanne - by saying I need a pump, is that in addition to a canister filter ? I only have an internal submersible filter and figured already that I can't connect a chiller to that.

If I need a pump + canister filter + chiller, then I'll need to a bit more homework.:D

You shouldn't need to- just be aware of what you're buying and don't be tricked into getting something that won't do the job :)

My tank is 80 litres so I've been looking for something to suit this size or slightly bigger.

Have just about settled on the Hailea HC100 Chiller which according to the info, will cool from 50 - 220 litres, flow rate of 200 - 1000 L/hr. I've also looked at the Enheim 2215 Canister Filter for tanks up to 350 ltres which has 620 L/hr output.

Can anyone tell me before I spend a bit of money whether they are compatible and whether or not they would do the job In my tank - I need to lower the temp by around 6 - 8C.

Thanks in advance :D

Any advice guys? Emailed the warehouse seller, not much help I'm afraid :(
