So, I'll be moving soon, and want to move Charmander into a newer, bigger tank when I do. I want to mount the tank to some type of stand like most, but the ones made like that are really expensive, and I'm worried about the weight.
tl;dr:
Any suggestions on what to use/how to build a stand that will serve as convenient storage and hold up the (size and) weight of a 20 long.

Bonus points for pictures of your own set up! ;D

I'm going to let the tank cycle before I put him in it, btw!

I found a second hand tank on gumtree with a great sturdy stand (not sure if you have that in the US?). Have you considered anything second hand?
I got this tank and stand for £70, bargain!

If not, I'm sure there will be some people with great ideas on here.

Depending on the height you want the stand to be - try looking on eBay for second hand furniture.

Old tv cabinets are going cheaply & can be good if you want the tank higher up. Sideboards / buffets / credenza / cupboard also bring up items you can pick up cheaply then drill a couple of holes in the back of the cupboard to run lines & pipes through :)

Here's my temp set up using an old tv cabinet that cost me $10 on eBay :)
Love a bargain!

Oh wow that looks awesome! What's in the smaller tank?

The smaller tank has my guppies & tropic tank occupants (Cory's, bristlenoses) - I'm doing a reshuffle to make that tank just for some tetras & the ones mentioned above & the guppies are about to get a 4ft tank just for them :) phew if only I had a slave to do all the hardwork ;) lol

I was originally going to put my 6ft up on Bessa blocks, but ended up leaving it just on a platform of 2x4s, and the lower height I've found had made maintenance so much easier :) My previous tank, on the other hand I had on my two chest of drawers, which worked really well (apart from when I had a filter seal go...) As Nikki suggested, ebay is magnificent for finding bargains, so perhaps try there, then Craigslist, perhaps? Can't wait to see what you come up with!!

Thanks for the suggestions! I want it to be at least 3-4 feet off the ground so people dont have to sit down on the ground to look in :p Ive been searching local garage sales, craigslist and ebay for tvc cabinents and entertainment centers although I doubt I'll find such a bargain like Nikki :p

Look for sturdy furniture :)

The trick to finding bargains on eBay is find the ones who haven't taken the the time to make the listing look good - crappy picture / very little info. Ask the seller for dimensions & then bid right at the end with 10 secs till auction ends & put in your final bid first (so the max amount you're prepared to pay for the item) you'll be surprised how many bargains you can pick up using that method :D

but shhhhh don't tell anyone
