I have a group of dusky salamanders who only eat crickets. Are there any other alternatives? I have tried to get them on earthworms but they turn their noses up to them. I really just want to change their diet because my GF hates crickets escaping and running around our apt. Any advice would be appreciated.

I feed my Desmognathus different things. I have never used crickets, because in my opinion they are not very nutritional.

Are you cutting up the worms, or feeding them whole? Sometimes I find they don't recognize cut up worms as food compared to whole ones. I culture red wigglers and just put them whole into the tank. My desmogs hunt them down themselves (I know they are eating because they poop -- a lot.)

Also, is yours a more terrestrial set-up? If it is I suggest putting isopods in it, they are a good food source and good janitors. Also try slugs and springtails; mine relish them.

If they are turning their heads up, its possible they are just waiting to strike. I say this because when tong feeding my duskies they just look at the worms for some time and when they see them wriggle enough they strike. This is just my experience, however.

If your crickets are escaping, make sure you have a tight-fitting lid. Dusky salamanders can climb and even jump.

Good luck! :D
