Hey all -

Some how I have recieved ten e-mails in the last half hour from Caudata.org. Every time somebody posts something, a copy ends up in my inbox. What is going on?

- Matt

This is the default function of the board - to disable it or customise it, edit your profile by going here: http://www.caudata.org/forum/cgi-bin/board-profile.cgi

It wasn't working for a while (a number of months) but has now been fixed. Judging by the number of people who complained when it stopped working, I can't win no matter what I do :p.

well john, i do have to admit its a bit annoying to receive EVERY reply that goes on the board. especially if you're a fairly new member and had no clue what was going on (IE: me) but i've figured it out and am on my way!

Well it's not the default for new accounts any more to have all emails sent to you, but it has been previously (and it was always in the profile options to be configured on or off).

i guess i just never bothered to look.... but, all is well, and i'm not getting 15 new caudata.org emails an hour

Hey John, Have you ever thought of more sophisticated and powerful forum software such as Invision Power Board? I use it for my own site, it's free and it's the best in my opinion. http://www.invisionboard.com/

Invision Power Board must be registered on a yearly basis and it also wouldn't convert our old posts. The only thing IPB has over Discus Pro is the slick "out-of-box" look. I think you'll find on the back end of things that Discus Pro is as good if not better.

Well, the site says: "Invision Power Board is available for a completely free unlimited trial for both personal and commercial use, no catches, no "spyware", no hidden costs anywhere."

I never ever had to register it, but it could be a thing with the newer versions.

For this site, Discus Pro is just fine, but it certainly isn't better than IPB!

Read the last two sentences of what I just said again. If your IPB board has nearly 10,000 messages on it and you've been using it for 2+ years, please let me know how you've found the backup facilities, auto-archiving and database options. I am pretty sure your opinion is based on IPB's look rather than anything else. It's certainly why I considered it at one point.

It's not because of it looks, but because of the endless options IPB has. I haven't used it for 2+ years yet, so I'm not familiar with how the thing will be in the future. You do? Impressive :p

It was just a suggestion, I just thought you may have not heard of it yet, but you obviously did.

On the other hand, it's nice to see something else than the IPB or Vbulletin forum software!

I just don't like it when people make blanket statements without backing it up somehow. Let's pretend I say "Red is better than blue." and nothing else in a message. Why is it better? It's meaningless without an explanation and I would be asking everyone else to take my word on the fact that red is better than blue. If no one knew if I had any detailed experience with colours then how could they know if I knew what I was talking about?

This is directed at everyone, not just to you and this bulletin board subject. Over the last few weeks a few new users on these forums have been commenting and replying as if they are experts with a particular salamander or newt but actually they are not and their advice isn't great, to put it kindly.

Whether you are giving advice about a sick tiger salamander (Kaysie) or bulletin board software (Coen), if you would like to advise someone (me or anyone), please give information to back up what you're saying. In the case of giving advice about sick animals, it's frequently better not to give advice if you don't _know_ that advice is correct.

So back to this forum issue, Coen please by all means tell me why you believe IPB to be superior to Discus. From what I can tell IPB wins on looks/appearance but not elsewhere. Am I wrong? If so please explain, but please don't simply reply saying "You are wrong."...

Allright, first of all, I said it was the best in my opinion, I didn't say it was the best in everyones opinion.

Second, like I earlier said, I didn't know you already knew IPB. I gave an URL so you could check it out and maybe consider it as being 'better'.

Third, read both the features of Invision: http://www.invisionboard.com/switch/ and Discus Pro: http://www.discusware.com/discus4/pro.php and keep in mind that Invision is totally free and Discus Pro costs 'only' $149.95

I could go on and discuss some of the features and how they could come in handy for this site, but I'm fine with this forum also, it does it's job very good, all the other functions are just 'luxury'. Seeing you already purchased discus pro, have members with posts, profiles and uploads, I can fully sympathize with your descision to stay with it, since there is no convertor for Discus Pro to IPB.

And for the last "back to this forum issue.." sentences; I never said you were wrong. And even though I never said that IPB is superior to Discus Pro, I do believe that's the case, since it's free, has far more options and simply looks better.

I also never heard anything about Invision being hard to manage after 2 years of use with 10.000s of messages. But extremely busy sites seem to be doing just fine with Invision.

Anyway, so far for my backup of argumentation. Feel free to ask some more, even though I thought Invisions site itself would be explanatory enough.

That's more like it Coen.

I decided to buy Discus after looking at IPB. I think Nate and I both looked at it (we read various reviews of different forum software too). Discus won from my point of view because we knew it, it has been reliable and we already had a lot of messages on it. If IPB ever come up with a discus converter I'm sure I and others will consider it tempting.

Thanks for your input ;).

[entering completely stupid joke mode] *Pfew* I almost thought you were gonna ban me there, if Discus Pro has that option ofcourse
