He swims all day and sleeps all night

Male or Female?

Such a pretty axie! And I'm no expert but I'd say male

He is a very very very beautiful boy!!
And you have a nice tank as well!

Very nicely coloured golden boy and a great set-up too! Just wondering why you're putting a heater in? Axolotls love cool water and winter in Australia in the easiest time of year to keep them as you don't have to worry about the water getting too warm.

Regards Neil

Where I am gets below 0 all through winter, and I've read it's not good for them to be that cold?

If you tank is inside I'd be surprised if it got as cold as 0. Probably more like 5-10 and that would still be a cold house. Those kind of temps are fine for axolotls.I'm not trying to tell you what to do but it really isn't necessary and will save your energy bill.

Regards Neil

They are lovable arent they? You know you will never stop at just one.
Like neil said you wont need a heater, some people have had their axie tank ice over and they have been ok. The heater could also burn your axie if he gets to close to it...please reconsider using a heater they really do like the water cold.

He wasn't' as active with the water warmer, so have unplugged it and will save it for my tropicals tank :)

Very cute, with his hand up it looks like he's saying "no flash photography" hah!

Honestly your best bet would be to invest in a thermometer (they are pretty cheap too!). That way you can keep an eye on the temperature to make sure it stays consistent and cool. Perfect temperature is around 17 celcius.

Our winter we get into the -30's and because the tank was in my room it was fine without a heater.

Temperature plays a really important role in having a healthy axie.

I guess a heater would be good for controlling the temperature, ie, no large temperature swings from day to night. but I don't think you can get heaters that can be set much lower than 18 degrees. kinda defeats the purpose of having one go lower than that since they are designed for heating tropical aquaria.

another issue is axie burns, they do like to sit around for long periods of time.
