I currently have 1 axie in a 20 gallon long. I am trying to decide if I want to upgrade to a 29 gallon or not. My stand can already handle it (its a 20/29 gallon stand). She quite likes to be up on top of things so I think she would like the height but after 6 months of stalking craigslist I am beginning to wonder if one will ever show up that is reasonably priced (The cheapest I have found was $200 with stand and they wouldn't come down or separate). For whatever reason everyone in my area selling a 29 gallon seems to want to sell it as a 'combo' with a million things I don't need that jack up the price.

I know Petco had a dollar a gallon sale around this time last year so I am keeping my eyes and ears open in hopes.

Can someone help me persuade me one way or another if a 29 would REALLY be that much nicer or if it is an unneeded added luxury?

Also, what are the chances of finding a second female axolotl that is already full grown? Would she perhaps be happier with a friend or do they prefer solitude?

Thanks! ;)

A second axolotl won't make her any happier. And it will increase the risk of injury. However, most people, for human reasons, prefer to have 2 or more together.

I think that the dollar-per-gallon sale will be your best bet. You'd have a hard time finding a 29-gallon in any kind of decent condition for less than $29.

It's hard to say how much the taller tank will increase her quality of life. It might allow you to have a more interesting setup.

Axolotls primarily live at the bottom of a tank. A number of people here say that they don't need much more than 15 inches of water in height provided the demensions of the tank allow for enough water otherwise. I personally would like a higher water level just for human reasons.

I agree with this, added height doesn't do much for an axi except add extra water. I think that most regular tanks have the wrong length to height ratio (custom tanks are better... yay for customs)

Extra water does help with maintaining good water quality though

Maybe my girl is just odd. She likes to climb on top of things like her PVC tube and chill up there. When she does that it puts her about half an inch from the top of the tank.
