I'm looking to upgrade my 22 gallon long tank from the fluval nano submersible filter to a canister. Petco has the zoomed 501 on sale and I was wondering if that was a good route to go. I only have one axie but I plan on getting a second one at some point. Also any recommendations as to what type of media I should use would be nice. Thanks!

Canisters often come with multiple layers - mine has 2x coarse sponge, ceramic noodles, plastic balls and felt. It also has an activated carbon bag, but that's optional.

A canister should be supplied with all it needs, run the 2 filters in parallel or add the old filter medium into the canister to avoid upsetting your cycle.

I have two tanks with ZooMed 501 turtle filters (which I think is different from the regular ZooMed 501). I think the 501 turtle filter is great. It has a flow of 79GPM which does not bother the Axies at all with a spray bar. I'm also using a chiller and the filter has handled the extra load just fine pushing the water through the chiller before it goes back into the tank.
