I am thinking of getting a canister filter for my 3 foot set-up as my current filter is a little noisy, and it annoys me having an internal filter.

Any suggestions on a good brand thats not too expensive? There are a few on ebay I was considering.. My bf just got one so we'll see how his goes first. :)

:)

I have a eheim and I havent had any problems with it. Have a look at the "guppysaquariumproducts" online store cause they have filters that are cheap. This is where Im thinking I will be getting my filter for the 5ft er Im doing up. Im sorry if Im not allow to give the web address. If it does get taken off PM me and I will send it to you that way.

I love love love love love my ehiem canister filter which I picked up off ebay for $60 (retails at $250 yay for me:D). Its the 2011 model (this has recently been renamed the 2211... but basically the same)... smallest canister filter that ehiem makes, but a great size for my tank which is about 105 litres in volume (which is just shy of 3foot in length and a little shorter than your average 3foot tank... got it custom made).

When I set it up I was skeptical over its claims of being 'whisper quiet' but once I got it filled and switched it on BAM it really was silent. Best investment ever! Also it was very easy to install... but I swapped out the ehiem tubing for some more flexible regular tubing (which will cost less to replace when it gets dirty).

Anyways shop around on ebay... my filter was new but had been tested out by its previous owner (came with her tank but she didn't want it). They go pretty cheap if you watch the auctions

This one is pretty cheap considering its new... I saw the same one in my LFS for about $340

I use a fluval 205 on my 30 gallon, and a fluval 305 on my 55 gallon. Both are extremely good filters and are a breeze to maintain.

I'm using a sponge filter right now because my babies are only in a 10 gallon, but in August they have a 55 gallon and an Eheim ecco 2232 canister filter waiting for them :) I'm getting it seeded in my 20 gallon fish tank right now, and it doesn't make a noise at all. it's great :) i found it for $50 on a forum that has a marketplace

Great buy!!! Ehiem are fantastic

WOW yellowpebble does that actually work?? How do you make the water move?

yes it does! it works the same as a small air powered sponge filter (but has a much higher intake) by having the air tube down the bottom. By blowing air out it draws the water in to fill the space, its called uplift. Its much more effective than a regular sponge filter because it has a huge sponge volume, allowing much more bacteria to grow, improving the nitrogen cycle. And you can add a variety of mediums, whatever you want... sand, gravel, sponge, wool, for a much more efficient filtration. It works the same was as one that costs hundreds of dollars, by pulling water through filtration mediums. it just doesn't use a motor to draw water, instead it uses a simple biological process, which is much healthier for axies because it is very low flow unlike a motor driven filter which has a strong output and requires something to dissipate it like a spray bar. You can even add carbon to eliminate smell.

I’m annoyed i bought an expensive motor one before i knew much about filters. It has very little filter medium compared to the $10 DIY version, is much too strong for the axies and raises the water temperature :(

Here is a web page that explains how this kind of filter works:
The Aquarium Corner Filter

This type of filter does work, although less efficiently than a canister filter. A large one (as illustrated in the video) might do well enough for an axolotl tank. I enjoyed the video!

i think it would providing you had a sand bottom and did poop scoops as well. I have always found filtration with a large pebble substrate difficult because all the poop just gets stuck there no matter how good the filter.

yellowpebble, how do you make the filter run? Is it like a syphon and you suck through the tube then just hang it out of the water or something? :S

I got my canister filter! I got the Aqua One 'Aquis' 550. The pet shop had a big sale on so I went for it. :D Can't wait to set it up but have to because I haven't got my new 4ft set-up yet.. :( Patience = difficult..
