Hey all. I was wondering about the effects of lit candles in the same room as newts, snakes, and turtles. Will the smoke harm them or effect their water quality?

Thanks!

I don't think the smoke from a candle or two would affect them any more than it affects us, unless it's being burned in a really small space with no ventilation. However, burning candles frequently (or in an unsafe manner) does significantly increase your risk of a house fire, which would surely endanger them (and you). Maybe I'm becoming a safety fanatic in my old age, but I can't see how the benefits of a candle ever outweigh the risks.

One concern is the chemicals that some of those candles hold. Amphibians have very permeable skin, and can be affected by these chemicals. When I plan on doing cleaning, or burning candles, I put a fabric cover over my tanks to help protect them from any of the residue.

Scented candles as well as many other products like that have been proven to increase risks of allergy-related issues and asthma in people and pets, so it is a concern.
