Canada-US trade

How many people are open to trading caudates between the US and Canada but cant mail them due to long waits in customs? if anyone is interested, i'm volunteering my services. i live fairly close to the canadian border and have worked out a system with a canadian citizen to ship these little fellas between the borders. Would anyone be interested in this?

How would that shorten the time in customs? The main problem that most people have is the cost of shipping and customs expenses, not time.

If you are planning on driving them over the border, that is just as illegal as shipping them.

aaron, i've inquired about the legality and have been informed by US Fish and Wildlife Service that its completely legal.

but nevermind....

also: the shipping cost would be significantly lower as people shipping from the US to canada would be shipping to me (in the US) and then shipping from a canadian address to a canadian address, not shipping internationally (which, whoever pays for that, i dont care, thats for seller and buyer to figure out)

Hi Kaysie and Aaron, I'm canadian and live close to the NY border. Aaron, Kaysie is right to a certain extent...it is perfectly legal to ship or drive through with salamanders into canada as long as they are not federally or internationally protected. In fact canadian law is pretty layed back when it comes to amphibians. I personally have a P.O box in NY and do this quite often myself. There is the negative belief that it is illegal, or you need permits ect... and this quite simply is not true. I simply call customs on both side of the border ahead of time and I usually never have any problems and usually I'm rushed through. The only time your going to have any problems is when your dealing with a rookie officer who does not know the system as well...at least in my experience.

Oh, I stand corrected. Is that because our borders are pretty well "open" with Canada?

~Aaron

i would assume so. the Fish and Wildlife service said that as long as i'm not dealing with endangered or CITES listed animals, i shouldnt have a problem.

so, do i have any takers??

If you can really do it, then this is a wonderful idea. We are seriously amphi-deprived up here, it seems the numbers of species available is very limited.
Nice to know you are thinking of us, all tucked away up here.
Tara

Bonjour Kaysie
I agree with Tara, it's a very good idea
Please tell me if you're close to the Ontario-Quebec border (I live in Quebec)
If yes, I could be very interested in your service because this year has been horrible in my area for the number of species available.
Please let me know (E-Mail me) the best way we can do it easily. As far as I am concern, the problem was not the $ but the availability of newts in my area.
Eric
N.B. Tara, maybe we can join together with other (eastern)canadians to order «large» number of newts/sallies in the USA with the help of Kaysie
Let me know if interested
Once again, sorry for my poor english....

Hey Eric, Tara and Kaysie,

If Kaysie is going to do that I would definitely be in for going with a larger order with you guys. I want Ambystomids...all kinds. What do you think Kaysie? Can you help us Canucks out?

And Eric, your English is much better then my French would be...don't underestimate your ability to type in English, you do it quite well!

PS. Spell check doesn't like Canucks.

I live near Detroit, about 4 hours from Rob. and i'm quite serious about this. i would like to organise it so i'm taking a whole group of newts instead of single ones multiple times.

if you guys can organize it, i'll be MORE than happy to pay canada a visit. i'm looking forward to it :D feel free to email me for more details newtgirl@hotmail.com

Even if you live in further parts of canada, i can still mail the newts to you from canada. if they've got a long trip, i'll house them at my house until my next trip to canada, and make sure they're well fed before they're put back into the mail system.

if anyone in canada is looking for american newts, or anyone in america looking for canadian newts, i'm more than happy to offer my search services as well.

if you guys are really interested, email me letting me know what you're looking for and i'll put up ads and see what i can find.

I am new to this site but have been keeping caudata for a few years, what I am looking for is anyone with experence raising rough skinned newts (taricha granulosa) you see I have 25 premetamorphosised newtlets and am looking for suggestions on housing and feeding. Any help would be appreciated

Mark, you would probably receive more replies to your post if you posted it as a separate post or posted in the newt help section

I'm making a trip sometime in July, does anyone want to send anything?

Salut Kaysie

I'm desperately looking for the following newts:
Alpine newts (Triturus Alpestris)
Banded newts (Triturus Vittatus)
Carpathe newts (Triturus Montandoni)
Smooth newts (Triturus Vulgaris)
and, why not, Marbled newts (Triturus Marmoratus)
So, if you think you will be able to put your hand on any of those newts, I'm your guy...
Doesn't matter to me if they are WC or CB, maybe you know people who breed any of them or find them on Kingsnake!!!!
I want a breeding colony of each species, so I need between 8 or 12 specimens of each ideally
Let me know privately (E-Mail) the best way to trade.
Be sure I'm serious and let me know your conditions ($, phone number, address...)
I really appreciate your will to help us (Canadians) and if I can do something on my side to help you, it will be a pleasure
best regards
Eric

N.B. Please no Crested newts, I already have Cristatus and Karelinii.

i'll see what i can do, eric

if i can find anything, i'll email you with the details
