Can you add salt to Chinese Warty newt's tank?

I just recently set up the tank, and it's my first time owning newts. I have had freshwater aquariums in the past and always added some aquarium salt to help with the tank health and reduce risk of certain medical problems such as Velvet. So it's more of me wanting to prevent problems rather than fix them. However, I wouldn't want to add salt thinking I'm preventing problems and actually cause more long term from the newt not tolerating the salt exposure.

I know you can do salt baths do help heal a sick/injured newt and saw that some people add salt to their Axolotl tanks but couldn't find information on whether or not adding aquarium salt in general was acceptable for Chinese Warty Newts.

It depends on the hardness of your water. The purpose of adding aquarium salt to axolotl tanks is because they like hard water.

What does "hardness" mean in that context...? Sorry if thats a stupid question.

Water hardness refers to the mineral content of your water. Do you have hard or soft water? You can test this with a kit or at the pet store, but the best way is to look at your coffee pot, pots and pans, glassware, etc. Hard water leaves a thin layer of mineral deposits on everything it evaporates from.
