I have noticed that a few of my larvae / axolittles have noticable bulges around their cloaca. This has been consisitant with a deffinate 2 of my 12/13 week youngsters. Is it too early to accept these are male? . I have had previous pets in the past and it tends to be very easy to sex the males at very early ages so i am a little curious if it could apply to the larvae. Thanks in advance.

I kept picking females babies at about this age when left to my own devises so went and picked the one with the narrowist face biggest bulge and fattest base of tail (this wasnt really scientific its just you can sex male tortoises this way so thought I would add it to my calculations) kept refering to freckles as a male (determined for him to be one though I doubted it at times!!) now his nails are black and I am 100% sure freckles is a he luck or not it worked ...freckles was about 4 cm when I got him

Yes still too early to tell sex. You'll probably notice if you kept them longer that the size will change as they grow - can be difficult sometimes to gauge whether they are male/female when they're under 18months. Our youngest male we were able to sex at 7-8 months, because he started dropping spermataphore all over the place. Another one of our males, we thought was female due to small cloaca we realised was a male at about 18months also spotted dropping spermataphores round a tank full of females, his cloaca isn't as large as the other males!

Cloaca size?

Hi Kapo! Could you post a pic of your male with a small cloaca? That would be really appreciated
