Hi all,

So I am wondering if I can use fly maggots/larvae.
They are on a mouse that was caught in a trap. So the mouse didn't die of poison etc. Would they be safe to feed?

Thanks! -Seth

I've fed maggots to my animals from time to time, but I don't think i'd risk them off dead animals, especially rodents, there's always a chance they've been poisoned at some point, even if it was the trap finally killed them.

OK thanks Chinadog. Back to chopping earthworms :kill: -Seth

As a side note, I hear maggots are relatively easy to culture... the problem is, flies only really lay their eggs on really nasty stuff. :-S

Yes, they pretty much culture themselves if you leave some meat or fish out for the fly's to lay eggs on. I read it's also common to get deformed flightless mutations, so you could soon culture a flightless strain if you can handle the smell.
I know how much you hate Nightcrawlers seth, but rotten fish is surely worse! ;)
