I'm using sand from the pet shop but under that I'm going to use some fine gravel from the river so the plants I'm putting in will grow better and I'm also boiling the gravel and then drying in the sun.

does this sound like a good idea or should I leave it

How big is the gravel? Generally speaking, gravel isn't really a good idea for axies as they can eat it and it can get stuck.

I'd avoid using gravel under sand throughout the whole tank... Eventually with cleaning & axolotls truffling the gravel will work it's way to the surface where it then becomes a danger.

I've just used some sealed glazed ceramic cups to place gravel / fertiliser tablet / plant in then covered with fine play sand.

It keeps the plants happy & axolotls safe. I've kept the tank floor bare so I can easily remove any uneaten food & poop.

Ok thanks for the help :D

one more thing iv'e got a 14 gallon 54 litre long tank could that hold two axolotls

It's all about the size of the tank ground space - personally mine are all in longer tanks & I think the bigger the better - cramming 2 into a small tank is bordering on cruel. Especially when they love swimming & getting up some speed :)
