Hi, I have a new Pachytriton labiatus and his aquarium is still being fine tuned. He has lots of room in a 10 gallon tank with plenty of cool circulating water. I was going to get some guppies to put in the tank for him and wondered if I got some small snails (cleaner snails) in the tank would he try to eat them? And if so, would that be potentially harmful? Also, any recommendations on the best aquatic plants for the tank? I noticed sometimes when I buy plants at our local fish store there are snails that turn up in the tank. Thanks!

Axolotls eat snails in the wild. Trumpet snails would be a bad choise(I'm pretty sure they are from Asia). I've seen some videos of axolotls eating snails, crushing the shell and spitting it out. It's a risk for potential blockage of the intestines(axolotls digestive track). Axolotls will eat anything that moves, including plants. I would recommend a cheap low light plant, you might have to replace them once in a while. Remember that axolotls like dark spots, alot of light will stress it out. Not enough light will eventually be the end of some plants. Java Moss and Java Fern I hear are probably in the top 5 plants that would work for our types of aquariums. For your snail problem I hear there is something you can wash your plants with to kill off snails. You are going to have to do some research on that I'm not sure what it is.
Hope I was of some assistance. Good Luck!

Misael, radsmom has Pachytriton labiatus.
Anyway,

#I still recommend not getting snails or a number of reasons, all which can be found in the link in my signature. Shrimp can be nice.

#Quarantine ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING you are planning on adding to your tank for at least 30 days, to prevent things like tank invaders + worse.

#Java moss + fern are favorites.
personally my favorite for any tank is elodea.

#Remember quarantine everything, that means your plants, those guppies, every decoration, any tank mates ect.
