Hey everyone so last week my GFP leucistic axolotl had what i thought was fungus on her gills so i took her out and gave her a salt bath. after 3 days of treatment it appeared to be all gone so i put her back into the tank. Yesterday while during my water changes like i do every Friday i noticed it come back so i thought il take her out and treat her again tomorrow. Today i woke up to take her out of the tank and it had got alot worse, her gills are almost covered in it and it has shrunk alot and is now starting to spread to the other axolotls. I have also been finding these white jelly things in the tank that looks somewhat like sperm packets but didnt think nothing of it so i just took them out while cleaning. Tank sits at 68-70 degrees, fully planted, 80 gallons with 7 axolotls.

Is this fungus? if it is why didn't the salt bath work? can i empty half the tank so that was its only 40 gallons and treat with jungle fungus? is jungle fungus a safe medicine to use for axolotls? if this is not fungus what would it be? Is this life threatening?

I'm not entirely sure what the stuff in your tank might be, but what's on your axolotls looks almost definitely like fungus. The trick with treating fungus with salt baths is to keep the baths going for a couple more days, even after you think the fungus is gone. Three days is a good amount of time to keep the baths up after it seems to have gone. Don't treat axolotls with medicines or chemicals because they're very sensitive and don't always respond well to the kind of medicines you would normally use on fish.

I know most fish medication is not safe for axolotls but in a worst case scenario what type of medication is axolotl safe, always good to have a back up. iv never had a fungus problem like this before worst i have had was the small little spot that went away fast and easy but i have a feeling this has something to do with those white jelly things what ever they are. Other than this tank here my other adult tank and all the tank with the babies are in great shape with no problems so far.

I just read on Axolotl.org that Melafix medicine is safe for axolotls. the one i have is for mouth fungus for tropical fish, if it good for mouth fungus is it also good for gill fungus?
