Can daphnia eat the new born axolotls

Short answer....no.

Are you having problems??

Mel

Ok, and a little bit lol! Well the axolotl babies started hatching friday 21st january 2011, and we have put 25 in each tub, the tubs are a bit bigger than shoe box size, and we have hatched about 60 so far, but we put some daphnia in the tubs last night and they havent ate any :( so im just a little bit scared as they are so tiny. is there anything i can do? thanks

Sometimes they dont eat for a day or two because they still have their egg sac/yolk sac to absorb.
Do the daphnia look big enough for them to eat?

Mel

There all different sizes in the bag, theres some big ones and some small :)

The only time the axies move is when the daphnia go near them lol

They might already be eating the small ones.
Look for them doing a hopping movement, this is them feeding.

Its not as easy to tell if they're eating with daphnia, with baby brine shrimp, their bellies go bright orange so its easy to see.

Can you get hold of some walter worms, or brine shrimp eggs a a back up food if the daphnia doesn't work??

Some people have had sucess with boiled egg yolk, theres a thread you can search for.

Mel

Yeah, im off to the pet shop in a bit :) so ill pick some up

After much searching, I found a kitchen strainer that is exactly the right size for separating Daphnia. Small daphnia pass through, large daphnia stay in the strainer (and then get rinsed out into a different container and fed to larger animals). Most kitchen strainers have the wrong mesh size, but it is possible to find one that works. If you are planning to raise larvae regularly, it might be worth finding one.
