I'm in the process of designing a new tank and before I put much time in my idea I need to know if they can climb rock walls....lol

They cannot climb. However, they can leap out of tanks, so if the water level is near the top, a lid is required.

I would just have a top - better safe than sorry and not very expensive ! (I had a cheap glass cover for $12 before I had live plants). A startled animal can do pretty impressive acrobatics !

At times my two would have a mad half hour and make a break for the surface. I didn't go for a glass top as the tank was second hand. I got a pair of plastic condensation guards for about £5 if that. Does the job fine.

Thanks for the help! I have a top... just was trying to think of a way to let my plants grow out ....guess I'll have to keep thinking..lol

Do you mean you wanted the plants to grow out of the tank?

Axies can not climb, they can however, swim. I have never seen an Axolotl jump out of the tank, but, that can be because I only have mine for 4-5 months :D
Indeed, better safe then sorry.

They can jump but I have my water level about 4 inches from the top and have never had one jump out. I am very cautious though and keep their area quiet and fairly dim. If you choose to keep your level high for cooling reasons or whatever then I would suggest a screen top. Happy addiction! :D

My two do a fine job of climbing. They swim to the are beside the internal filter (still waiting for my external to arrive) and use it to wander higher. No idea why but it seems to entertain them.
