So I have one of “those” axolotls: extremely picky. He will eat the following: live blackworms, Repashy, brine shrimp, pellets (sometimes). I have a blackworm culture going for him, but I am concerned about the low calcium of blackworms on an ongoing basis. The more research I do, the more that I see black soldier fly larvae are great for this. Has anyone tried feeding these to axolotls? I know that Repashy Bug Pie and Meat Pie are both like 90% soldier fly larvae, but I prefer live foods where possible. He will eat Repashy but not with the same interest as blackworms. Interestingly, the blackworms themselves also love the Repashy. I was considering gut loading the blackworms by feeding the culture tank with Repashy. Would this help, do you think? Or maybe axolotls aren’t as susceptible as non-aquatic salamanders to calcium deficiency?

When I say I’ve tried earthworms, I mean.. I have tried and tried. Multiple species, cut up, not cut up, tried starving him till he’d eat them.. no luck at all.

Hi,
I've never had issues with calcium on axolotls but mine accept almost everything except red wigglers.
Nevertheless,
- terrestrial salamanders readily eat woodlice, which are calcium rich. This is a good booster for their growth,
- most axolotls accept woodlice in spite of the fact they are not aquatic preys (but neither are earthworms after all)
So I suggest you try woodlice

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
