While I was away at work this evening, my wife snapped the oddest photo of my C.pyrrhogaster all huddled together in the same plant for whatever reason:

I keep them in a spacious (120x60x45), heavily planted tank and have never seen them all in one place like this (except at feeding time). Perhaps they regularly have secret meetings when I'm away?! Maybe even a secret hand-shake or tail fan?!

Have they recently caught "The Great Escape"?
Were they hiding excavated soil from the new tunnel? Did one sneak under the wire while they distracted your wife?

all newts are equal, but some are more equal than others.

are all of those pyrrho,s the same race?
or do you keep them together in that big tank?

Hi Reinder. As you seem to have noticed, no, the ones in this tank are not all of the same race.

When I got married, I was forced by circumstances to reduce the number of tanks and the only way I could achieve that was by mixing my pyrrhogasters. I can easily tell some of them apart (especially C.p.sasayamae!). In some cases, I'm able to refer to pics taken of them in the past, but I tragically lost many of my records of them when my former computer died

Nevertheless, I do have five other pyrrhogaster-only tanks in which they are separated/isolated by location and I have no intention of mixing them.

aah i see ok, my thought was that when the breeding season begins these can,t be kept together, since if they would lay fertilised eggs you wouldn,t know wich race they are.

but i understand the problem of the tanks.
any pics of your tohouku race??

LOL Tim!
What great photos! It reminds me of the "The Band of Brothers" to "The Band of Newts"!
They are truly beautiful specimens.
It almost can be in a Gary Larson cartoon..."As the newts perform their ritual dance, one blares out 'Here she comes again...quick...look inconspicuous!"

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
