Just got 2 orientalis today and they are doing quite well. So far, one has eaten its fill and the other was hunting, so i'll see if I can get it to eat tomorrow. Looks like I may have a pair...but the one with the swollen cloaca is also plump with a shorter tail then the other(who is more slender with a spectacularly long tail...looks almost like the male C. e popei in the caresheet).
Has anyone noticed the odd feeding behavior? They are very deliberate. I've seen then "sniffing" or otherwise blowing into the sand...sometimes sending up a small puff of mulm. I noticed when one of them approached a helpless earthworm slice...it was blocked by a malaysian trumpet snail's shell jutting out in front of it. The newt nosed around, and eventually pushed/dug under the snail and pushed it out of the way to grab the chunk. I think it would be interesting to almost completely bury a food item and see if the would uncover it.
Wonder what they eat in the wild?
