Here are some of the newts responsible for those larvae:

(notice the tiny larva in the top left corner)

I'm especially attached to these particular popei adults, having caught (and in some cases rescued) them myself in Okinawa

I've never seen it happen -- not to say it doesn't!

Then again, my adults are fed pretty well.

The adults and larvae feed sometimes in the same area. The larvae are relatively quick and smart enough to move away when the more sluggish adults get too close.

If there were one species of cynops I'd consider keeping, it'd definately be e. popei. Beautiful collection, Tim. I even like the black colored larvae

! Do you know of their availability in the U.S., or are they strictly available in Japan (via pet shops and/or collection)?

they become available in the US every so often. I managed to get a colony of 11 juvies together this year.

Thanks Ira. Do you plan on breeding them when they're ready? If you do, you've already got a customer

i wont have any for several years and i am unsure as to wether i am going to breed them or not seeing as they are all siblings.
