Nice! I'm using wool - but that is a nice method too - anyway the wool looks better in the tank :-D

Best Greetings,

Kamil

Can you describe the kind of wool? Is it the kind of yarn that is used to make a sweater, for example? Or some other material?

Great picture, Jen.

It almost looks as if the newt is exploding onto the scene in a puff of smoke

Killifish people use yarn to make what they call "spawning mops".(acrylic ones work I've found but of course everyone likes to talk about some random kind they found their fish really like). They eventually waterlog but you can float them using a cork or sink with a weight. Also pretty easy to make. No idea if newts would like them or not though.

Great photo! That female has a really unusual belly pattern.

Newt-cam! Awesome! Is it real wool, Kamil, or synthetic? I will try this. Maybe I can get green and really fool the newts into thinking it's a plant!

That wool idea looks very cool. And looks much easier than plastic strips to make and get apart. I'd love to try this with my Karelinii this year.

Great information, Joseph.

My wife might not be too happy about me using the microwave for sterilizing things, but she'll just have to get used to it!

The dye is a bit scary, I have to admit...

I agree on the dye thing...part of what kept me away from them until I got tired of looking through java moss for the eggs(killifish) when I wanted to have them for close view(which took forever...much easier in a mop). If you find a brand someone has been using several years without problems it should be safe. I found some black acrylic yarn at Wallyworld a few months ago(it is easier to spot eggs on darker colored mops) and so far no problems. However I never thought of trying them with newts.
