Hello! I have a Tiger Salamander who has a bump near the end of his tail, with what looks like a sore/ulcer. Hoping someone might see this and would be able to help me out or give me some advice on what I should do and what is safe! Photo supplied at bottom.

I have a local exotic vet that I am willing to take him to if it deems necessary, yet they are more experienced in more “common” exotic pets like geckos or bearded dragons. So I thought I would ask those on this forum who are caudate enthusiasts for advice first!

I have had him for 2 years. He is currently in a 20g tank, with eco Earth, a small water dish (water changed regularly as he likes to take occasional dips), a few live pothos (fert free), some wood pieces, and a hut. Springtails help keep the tank clean, and I stir up the substrate every so often to avoid any anaerobic areas, and replace the substrate entirely when necessary. Substrate is kept moist, but not dripping wet. His enclosure is sprayed with dechlorinated water twice daily.

He currently eats a diet of small dusted crickets, and small Dubia Roach nymphs fed on Repashy Bug burger. He gets earthworms when I can find them from a reliable source.
I have had no health issues since I got him, and he eats VERY well when he comes up from the substrate. How often he comes up for food depends on our ever unpredictable weather fluctuations here in MI, but the room never gets below 65 or above 75.

A few things have come to mind on trying to figure out what caused this issue. The most likely scenario I could think of is the following: He is hand fed, and once or maybe twice a cricket has come lose from the feeding tongs and hid among the cage decor. Maybe a cricket bit his tail, the area become irritated, and possibly infected? Other than this, I can’t think of much. Everything in his tank is safe for salamanders. I do not directly handle him.

If anyone has any suggestions or advice on what to do, it would be greatly appreciated. I’ve done a lot of research on common issues/diseases on Tiger salamanders, and nothing I’ve found looks quite like this.

If treatable at home, which medications/treatments are safe and best for this issue?
Any help is appreciated, thanks!
