So me being foolish and not spending money on lighting, brown algae has overtaken my tank. It killed all my plants in my walstad:( so obviously I can't have a cleanup crew, but I'm gonna teardown and replant. And get new (low) lights. A lot of people use silicate-removing compounds but I think that's a chemical that axolotls might be sensitive to. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of/prevent it? Its mucky and clogs up my filter.

I've only had problems with brown algae in new setups. It "blooms" then subsides. I've never had enough to clog filters, it's usually just a thin layer over everything.

Can you get some indirect natural light onto the tank? Did you have plants suitable to the low temp and low light? Different plants might do better.
