Ok, so I've probably been annoying everyone with annoying questions about which newt I might possibly be able to keep in my already set up tank, however I happened to spot some striped newts at a zoo, and decided to break down and set up a new tank for newts. I already have everything I would need for an aquatic setup as I have a few fish tanks lying around. I've been doing a lot of research and I was hoping to get some input. I was thinking the best bet for a ten gallon tank would be a broken striped newt. I would like a fully aquatic newt, or at least a newt that would be primarily aquatic and would only need a piece of driftwood escaping the water surface to be fine. The smaller the better for me, as I hate cramping my animals. Unfortunately it appears the striped newt which I really enjoyed seeing are endangered, but the broken striped newt still seems pretty small, and aquatic as well.
Is there another possibly smaller/more aquatic newt that might fit the tank better? Still doing research, but I would like to avoid newts like the firebellied newts/paddletail just because they can get up to 6 inches and that just seems too big for a ten gallon.

Mesotriton (alpine newts) species are pretty small. They are also generally fully aquatic. one thing to keep in mind though is that the smaller the newt, the harder to feed. larger newts can eat run of the mill earth worms, smaller newts need smaller ones, or black worms, etc.

Any of the Notopthalmus species would probably fit your needs, as most are primarily aquatic.

And in addition to what Patrick says about alpine newts, I'll say this: they're REALLY pretty. The males get especially colorful, and grow a large crest during breeding season. I think it looks like a mohawk.

Although i fully agree they are absolutely gorgeous (arguably the most colorful species of newt), i wouldn´t call the crest large. It´s actually a rather pitiful crest of barely 2-3mm. A large crest is what T.dobrogicus has xDD.
I.alpestris makes a brilliant captive, but you need to make sure you can provide the proper temps for them.
