I currently possess two female axolotl and am interested in breeding them. I acquired these lovelies as an adoption and have since, with the help of this wonderful website, learned how to properly care for them.

I am now interested in breeding them if possible and obviously one needs males as well as females to do so. The question is this: Where does one get axolotls from for purposes such as this?? Is there a listing of dealers/breeders, etc. somewhere?

I'm looking for advice and direction and any help would be appreciated. Responses can be sent directly to me at:

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Hi Bill, place an ad in the “wanted” section of the forum. You should specify which area of the US you are in as axolotls are not the easiest to ship. If you want a specific sex it’ll need to be mature which will add problems to shipping simply because of the size of the creature. With luck you’ll find someone local to you.

Why do you want to breed them?

I'm interested in the husbandry aspect of these amphibs. They have always fascinated me and now that I have had an opportunity to possess and interact with them, I am even more intrigued. I'm really interested in observing, if possible, their reproductive habits and rearing any progeny that might result.

The individual who gave me one of my two axolotls also had a male, but he died. I am unsure of the circumstances.

Are you familiar with anyone in the southern NY state area that is involved with the care/husbandry of axolotls?

Again, thanks in advance for any or all help.
