I was wondering if anyone had any experience with axolotls breeding on sand, or am I going to need to put a horizontal hard surface in the tank of some kind? Curious!

My axies are kept on sand without any issues. I actually just shipped eggs today! Most were attached to plants but a few were on the sand.

Same here my axies are on sand they lay eggs a few times a year.

Should have been more specific, I am not worried about the eggs getting layed on sand, I am wondering if the male's spermatophores will be able to stand up and be found by the female if there is no hard surface for them to be stuck to.

I don't have personal experience with this, so please take it with a grain of sand...uh...salt. Ha. (My attempt at being funny.....hmmm.)

Anyway....I spoke with a breeder a while back who had a lot of problems when his axolotls bred with sand substrate in the tank. He said that a good deal of sand stuck to the eggs, and it was impossible for him to get it off the eggs. He said that a large number of his tiny larvae died from impaction because they apparently ingested tiny grains of sand.

It seems like others have not had this issue, but I thought I'd just mention that it is a possibility.

i too have had slight issues with sand. once she has covered all the plants in the tank she then goes to the sand. they get burried in it. very hard to get any of it off. it can be easier to get out of the tank though, as you can more easily scoop it out vs having to pull the plants out and wring em off the plants. which is a super pain if theres hundreds. once they hatch you then have to move em or suck out the egg case anyways so you mine as well get the sand sucked up too..
