Hey all,
So I recently moved my two newts into a new 30 gallon tank and within a few hours my male had changed colors (that blue shimmer as well as spots on his back even). My other newt (that I am pretty sure is female) hasn't really changed at all and I was wondering if there is any noticeable change besides getting huge with eggs or something? Additionally, is there anything I could do to help her... "get in the mood"??? I've seen on several occasions my male newt doing the typical stuff trying to get her attention or whatever but she doesn't seem to bite.
Anyways, opinions and/or insight on the matter would be great, thanks! :D

There are no changes in appearance for the female apart from, as you say, getting huge.
The best way to help them along is to provide optimal conditions, ie excellent water quality, live plants with small rounded leaves like Bacopa, or Rotala for egg laying and plenty of high quality food like nightcrawlers, or pellets. The female will only breed once she is happy with the conditions, so its normal for her to take a while before accepting the male's advances.
She might start her egg laying at night, so once you start finding folded leaves, you know things are starting to happen. :)

Something I like to do it to simulate a change in season. I know some people would throw them in the fridge for a day or two or what not but my pair will breed if I a)lower the water level down to maybe an inch or two. B) leave all lights off for a few days c) stop all feeding d) then fill their tank up with nice fresh cool water, get the lights back on and offer plenty of food.
