Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knows anything about culturing bloodworm im guessing it would be hard to do. but would be a handy culture to have I think.

It has been done before...but the main difficulty is that you have to provide some airspace to mate and breed as midges. I've heard of a guy with some that lasted several generations in a covered fishtank.

so if you are willing to experiment, it is well worth a try!

I can imagine one of the challenge as how to prevent midges escape when nesting the bloodworms out.
Is live bloodworm really irreplaceable? It seems like culturing black worms seems to be easier.
My friend in Hong Kong was always able to put a bowl of water outdoor and eventually find bloodworms naturally in the water. Dont know if this is possible in else where of the world.

Although I have not researched enough, some naturalist in Ontario Canada told me that there are bloodworm in Canada as well. I was surprised at first, cause I never seem live bloodworm for sale in Canadian aquarium.

Yes the midges escaping was my main concern, and keeping the temp low enough for them. has anyone attempted a bloodworm culture on here then .

The nearest thing I have really is an uncovered water butt in my garden.
You get a lot of midge/mosquito larvae and lots of other invertebrates in there too.
I also have an old battered fish tank I keep outside for daphnia cultivation - you get them in there too.
I really wouldn't fancy the idea of breeding them indoors tho - if so I'd stock up on the antihistamines!
