Hi all,

I just noticed that one of my P. Chinensis Juvies is having trouble submerging. I tried to help him submerge, and he is definitely incapable of staying under water. This newt is about 2 yrs old (CB), and is the largest and fattest of my 4 juvies. This morning, he was under water and begging for food as usual, and I gave him a small piece of earthworm. Each one of the other 3 juvies in the tank also had a piece of the same worm, and none of them are exhibiting signs of bloat. I tested water chemistry, and everything tested normal, but I did a 25% water change anyway, just in case. Please let me know if there is anything else that I should do!

Update: he is still having trouble submerging today, although he does seem in good spirits. He was on land over night and for most of the day, but this evening he re-entered the water to beg for food. He is still floating, but he tries his best to submerge, and can do so as long as he holds on tight to a plant.

I've attached some pictures from this evening, as well as a video. In the video, you can see him floating at the beginning. He then starts to swim, but floats upwards whenever he pauses. At the end of the video, he grasps on to a moss ball in order to anchor himself at the bottom of the tank.

Can anyone out there can diagnose his problem?

Update: He has recovered, and is now able to fully submerge again! Attached is an image of him back to his sassy self.

Keep watch on the little guy. Bloat can sometimes reoccur. He looks a lot happier now.
