Hi,
So I've read that axolotls are sexually mature by 7 months and that their toes turn black. I have 5 axolotls that are almost 4 months old, and yet their toes are turning black. They are all 6 inches. Should I be concern that they seem to be sexually maturing sooner? Or are they? These are my first axolotls so I just want to make sure everything is okay. Thanks for the answers!

It is possible as they seem a good size. However I would advise you to separate the sexes as breeding too young may not be in the best interest of the females long term health.

Okay, thanks I'll do that.

Also when they're toes turn dark it doesn't necessarily mean they're done maturing. I've had males turn their toes but not show their cloaca till months later.

See ive wondered the same thing, one of mine has black toes but still has no difinitive looking sex as yet..
