Black Stain & Transportation

Hi
It's me again...I noticed today my axie has a pretty big black stain over his left eye (which wasn't there yesterday). The funny thing is that it looks like his body colour (just a bit darker), so I don't know what it could be.

Another thing....I'm travelling tomorrow for one month, by car, for a beach house. I thought of taking him - do you think it's totally nuts of me? But there wouldn't be anyone to look after him here...

Is your axolotl a lecy?

because mine semmed to sudddenly just get a darker stain on his face over night. if its a sort of browny colour then its normal.

Look at this link ( im learning ;) )

Does it look like this?

i suppose its okay taking your axolotls away with you but how will he/she be transported and is the tank it will be in be big enough? if its a long car ride then it will be rather bumpy? cant you get someone to check on your axy even if its once or twice a week and put in loads of feeder fish for him/her?

Thanks! Actually, he is kind of brown in colour. I'll try to take a picture of him to show what I mean.

As for the transportation, he would be taken in a tank, not huge but big. I'll see if I can get someone to check on him here, but I think I would have to take him.

Gabriela,

Axies DO NOT like moving water.. I have had to transport an axie on a hour journey to and from the vet, I found this was very stressful for the animal.

I dont think it would be advisable to take it with you, it wouldn't be fair for it to be in the tank. While your pn the move the water will rock back and forward and so would the axie.

If you took the axie with you have you thought where you would get food from and how about the temps, it gets very hot in cars, some others for you to think about if you do take it is water quality and where to get the water from.

I think the best option is to get someone to look in on it every 3-4days while you are away, then you have more chance of the axie staying alive while your away.

Personally I wouldnt risk it, but its your call, good luck in what you choose to do.

I wouldn't put loads of feeder fish in with the axolotl as was suggested above. Feeder fish are not always healthy not to mention they nip axolotl gills. And a "load" of them would possibly foul your water.

You just moved it to a new tank it is already kind of stressed out. A month is a long time for it to go with out food. I would suggest finding someone to come in once or twice a week and feed it.

I worry about the water level and water quality of going a month with no one checking on it that knows what they are doing.

Axolotls and long vacations just don't mix, and since you just moved him to a new tank this doesn't seem like the best time to leave it alone.
They hate traveling as well. If it were me... I'd just stay home. Or find the axolotl a new informed owner before I left.

Hi everyone! Thanks for all these tips on travelling. I'm concerned though about the dark stain on top of his eye. I'm attaching these photos, maybe someone knows what it is. Help!!

I hadn't noticed the heart shape, that's true! It is kinda cute. But did you notice that the eye(with the spot) is kind of swollen? Or am I seeing things? I'm worried.... But he seems ok other than this.

On both pictures the left eye looks kind of the same colour as the stain. Is it like this on the other eye to (and it is just how the picture has been taken)

The golden iris is a normal feature of wildtype axies and is due to iridophores (shiny colour cells.)

The colour cells are laid down at different depths in the skin...i would guess it's a graze that will heal in time. But take care to make sure you look out for infections...
