Question: Black Sand Substrate?

Hi! I have a question regarding black sand as substrate. My LFS sells New Zealand black Iron sand and I would love to have this in my tank, but I have heard some people say that black sand is too sharp? However some have said black sand is fine, so I am opening up the discussion to see if I can get anything conclusive. :happy:

Failing that, I will do a slate bottom; is there anyone in the Auckland area who can point me in the direction of black slate tiles? And I would need black silicone sealant as well.

In my research I've found the best way to determine if the sand particles are too sharp is to see it yourself in person. That being said, I've not read about anyone using iron sand, and I have no idea if it would harmful or not. Hopefully someone else here can give you more input.
