I recently heard that black sand is dangerous to axolotls. Is this true? Apparently, ALL black sand contains iron that, when ingested, will damage an axolotl's liver and cause death. Does anyone have info on this? I have black sand in my tank and I'm kinda worried now...

It depends on the brand of sand, some sand is a ph buffer, others are neutral. It should say on the package what it has in it. I use CaribSea Super naturals tahitian moon sand and my axy is doing great. This sand is black.

Iron is usually red, not black. You can run a magnet through the sand if you are worried. Iron will be attracted to a magnet. Anything that sticks should be removed and discarded.
