:( My nana was looking after my mothers axolotl and I saw it wasn't being looked after properly it was just in a tank of water.... and that is it. So i took it and have done everything an axolotl needs to flourish and be happy. When I took him I noticed this big black lump that had grown on his side while in my nanas care, does anyone have any clue what it is and what I could do to make him better?

I should also say the lump is the size of an m&m

It's a very small picture and unclear, can you get a better one?

What are your parameters? And what's his behavior like?

Also please get rid of the gravel and go bare bottom or very fine sand. They will ingest the gravel and get impacted :(

Like Hayley said, please get rid of the gravel right away, this is URGENT. It can be very harmful if the Axolotl ingests it (which it will).

I worry about the rest of your husbandry if you have gravel - what is your tank temperature, is the tank cycled? What are the water parameters? (ammonia, nitrite and nitrate)

Tank is 18 degrees celcius and the water is fine I had it tested the the vets.

Hard to say I think a vets opinion/biopsy is needed. Due to the axolotls regenerative abilities it looks like a mass growth - was there an injury that you or nana know of? It also looks like a mole, but I don't think axolotls get moles haha!

Yeah I'm not 100%. Vets is your best bet. Keep us updated if you take him.

I've noticed your baby is a Leucistic (a white axolotl with black or dark 'freckles' and spots and black eyes). There is a chance this might be some kind of axolotl 'beauty spot,' where pigment has built up. Axolotls can get lumps for all sorts of reasons.

I do agree with Hayley though. To be 100% sure a vet's advice may be needed. DarkMaverick is a vet on here and has given very helpful and reassuring advice in the past.

I'd love to know what you've found out as my new axie that I just got given has exactly the same lump! I've been really worried about it and searched everywhere hoping to find what it was and if it's an okay growth or not..

Hauswife, I think that axie generally looks a little weird. Maybe it's the angle or maybe there's something more going on. Does he/she have gills at all? Could you take a picture from the front?

Prototype, I don't know if it's normal or not but I personally think your axie's gills are a little small. Maybe that has something to do with the axolotls developing black lumps? Funny how he has the exact same problem.
