This newt (just the black one, not the others) belongs to a friend of mine and I just "borrowed" it for a few pics.

Let me try brightening that up a bit to give you a better look at its belly...

Isn't there a good Japanese word for ashes or coal? Maybe it should be called Cynops "sekitanensis"!

Wow that newt is beautiful how did your friend get it's stomach to be black? Did it just end up like that or did it just not eat any food that reddens it's stomach as a larvae (i thought i heard artema reddens the stomach as a larvae on these forums or does it not exist? )did he buy it like that?

sorry I'm new at this

Come on Tim, you know it's not good to paint on your newts!

That's awesome, and quite unusual at that.

This newt was caught in west-central Honshu

A couple of years ago, I caught a C. ensicauda popei with an almost entirely black belly. But I just failed to locate a picture of it in this forum using the "search" function. I'm still keeping it, so I'll try to remember to post a shot of it. But it's not as impressive as this C. pyrrhogaster!

Hi Tim,

I never saw such a dark one!
Here one of my C. pyrrhogaster sasayamae with only very few red, a female, CB, 7 years old:

That's one incredible animal you got there, Paul!
Nearly as black a belly as the one my buddy has.
It'd be nice breed the two animals and see what emerges....

Thanks for finding that photo for me, Terry
