searching for a black axolotl!!!!! turns out our what was a black axolotl has grown up to look more like a wild type which we cant keep in our 150 gallon tank so he is hanging out on the dining room table in a 10 gallon tank his back is a dark grey color but his belly is white and he is so unusual I don't see us being able to put him in with the others in the 150 gallon tank his personality just isn't right for us. I am willing to pay as I know they are somewhat unusual to find for sale I just want my dream of owning a black axolotl to become reality and not get screwed again!!!! if you have one for sale or know of one for sale please let me know!!!!!

when you say its personality isnt right for u what do u mean?

There is a for sale/wanted section on the forums.

What do you plan to do with your wildtype? 10 gallons is a little small for an adult axolotl.

First before you go buying another axolotl I just want to make sure you aren't giving away your current one just because its a wildtype... because in my opinion thats pretty messed up and irresponsible.

If you have to give him away because he actually has behavioral issues like nipping at other axies constantly etc and you cant provide for another larger tank thats fine but you didn't really clearly state his problems.

(as for the melanoids) Black axies, yes there is a sale section and if no-one has any or is not willing to exchange right now I'm sure in less than a few weeks someone will put a few up, just gotta be patient.

:( I just lost my black melanoid to an unknown illness. It made me very sad... I posted about the unknown illness in the sick forum- if anyone would like to help me figure out what's wrong...

I agree that giving away an animal because it doesn't turn out to look like you wanted may seem to be wrong, but if you loose interest in an animal for any reason- it is indeed better to give it away to someone who will care for it. So you are making the right choice whatever you're motives may be. Thank you for caring enough about the animal to find it a new home instead of just neglecting it like some people do. I wish everyone with an unwanted animal would make the same choice of giving it another chance with someone else.

When you say 'black,' do you mean a black Wildtype or do you mean a black Melanoid? Either type can be black. Are you more upset because he is grey or because he is Wildtype?

When I bought my first axolotl he was labelled as 'black,' and after a few months he turned a chocolate brown colour, with a speckled grey tummy and the Wildtype eyes. I realised that he had been quite young and perhaps hadn't had the right foods to help him grow. I realised he was a Wild Type when I spotted his eyes, and knew then that the LFS perhaps didn't have enough information about the axolotls to know what colour they were considered within the hobby. Often people either breed independently and thus don't necessarily use the labels we use - case in point, my 'albino' axolotl who is actually a Golden - and so it can happen that what we are sold is not necessarily what the axolotl will become, or is. Axolotls also change vastly in their first year or so, so what begins as a black axolotl can quickly change to a chocolate brown axolotl, like my Tooth.

I understand that you are upset, but I think I'd like to know what the personality issues are with this axolotl. Is he/she aggressive or snappy?

If you are after a specific type you must remember that people can't always promise that what the axolotl is now is what it will always be. They change vastly. It's also worth remembering as well that you can tell a WT from a Melanoid by the eyes, so you'll know what type you are getting.
