I have a friend who has recently aquired 7 black and white axolotls, a mix of male and female.
one of them has been very busy the last few days laying eggs all around the tank.
I just wanted to check what colour the eggs should be. they are predominantly white AND black on the same egg. is this normal.
and other than water changed should she/ I be doing anythng else for the eggs in order to produce viable offspring?
\
We have taken them out of the main tank, and now have a bucket each with about 100 eggs.

Not sure about the colour of the eggs as i've only seen black or white eggs. But i would say unless you have room for 200 axolotls you need to get rid of some. I think you will struggle to feed 200 and find them new homes. If you do intend to keep and raise them start lookin into food sources now. If you plan to hatch your own brine shrimp do a batch now to make sure you can sucessfully hatch them. Dont wait until they've hatched in case it goes wrong and you have nothing to feed them. Mel

yeah, I was planning on getting rid of a bunch of them. probably most will end up as food for my 3 month olds. or I'll see if anybody wants some.

 Congratulations Axylottie (like your name)!

Correct me if Im wrong experts but you will have many black and many white axies!!.

Well done for separating them. You have about 7-14 days to prepare food for your babies. You have to sought out some baby brine shrimp eggs (BBS - I bought mine on ebay) and a hatchery. Youtube - brine shrimp hatchery to get tips on how to set it all up. It's not difficult and will cost you about Aussie $15.00. That will do for starters......

It depends on the parents as to what the babies will be. I use an empty pop bottle, aquarium salt, an air line and eggs to hatch my bbs. Then just pour the lot in a bowl and pipette off the bbs. At cost of just eggs and salt. Easy.

Axolotl eggs should be black and white. One color is the egg's animal pole, the side that goes through many rapid cell divisions. The other color is the vegetal pole that divides much more slowly.

ok great. have found someone who is trading me daphnia and microworms for some of my eggs.

Hi, i didn't rate microworms to be honest, daphnia is ok but you'll need a constant source. I personally would recommend hatching baby brine shrimp. You can get eggs from ebay and you dont need to use many to get a reasonable amount of food. I tend to end up with too many and babies bursting at the seams with big orange brine shrimp bellies, lol.

HI,

black and white eggs have been laid by a leucistic (white axie with dark eyes) female.

-Tina-

I personally saw a dark wild type female laying them, so I guess one of the leucistics was the father, if that is the case.

Good luck!
How many did you keep?
Did you get them some baby brine shrimp?
Mel

yup, got the bbs, had just hatched some yesterday just in case, and got some more started now. i've got about 30 I think. They ate a bunch of microworms this morning too.

oh and I meant to ask: should i remove the empty eggs or leave them?

If there grows fungus on it, it's better to remove them, without damaging the good eggs ofcourse. If the empty eggs look normal, there's no harm for the other eggs

by empty I meant the ones that have been left after the axys hatched, so i just leave them?

Oh please do immediately remove those empty eggs. They get fungusy and remain there for aeons, fouling the water in the process. They don't break down rapidly and stick to everything and can make cleaning a nightmare.

30 is a good number thats the amount i raise. Sounds like your doin well with them so far! Well done. Out of interest what colour are they lookin now? Mel
