I am so MAD right now. LONG POST BUT PLEASE READ
We rescued two axolotls the wildtype who has gold flecks and the skinny lucy I think I've posted pics before. They lived together and the lucy was extremely thin and so I presumed the wildtype had been biting the Lucy's legs because it was hungry.
They came to me and the wildtype has always been fine with weight and no injuries.
The lucy was completely missing a leg and all three others are malformed and they were red and he was very very thin.
Nursed him back to health, he's gaining weight; the lost leg is growing back. All redness in the other limbs gone.
For the past few weeks all three axies have been separate (I have a copper she's too small to be involved) in huge tubs due to heat and also to care for the lucy better.
Heats gone and I have redone my largest tank which can fit all three in fine (when copper is older) and so I put in the lucy and wildtype together again and everything has been fine the last week. I feed them daily even the wildtype to avoid nipping. (Took down the wildtypes tank as I didn't have room).
Yesterday I saw that the lucy (Norris) had a bit of a red "wrist" so I presumed that the wildtype (Nina) had nipped at him. I thought he'd be fine it was probably a one off as they'd been rolling all over each other and "cuddling" with no biting.
Get up this morning and there's Norris with his leg raised up as if it's really sore, look closer (he was in a corner) and his leg is flipping red raw and all swollen and bleeding and crushed. ??? he's not using it AT all.
I'll attach pictures. That was his one fully functioning leg for heavens sake. His one back one is still growing back, his other back one is very malformed so can't use it very well at all, his other front one just doesn't bend very well and now this one has been savaged. ??
So really I have two questions, can you have just a generally savaged moody asf axolotl who doesn't need no man or lady in her life? I stupidly put all of her tank away as I thought I wouldn't need it any more and I don't have the room to set it back up again. So at the moment she's in the tank all alone and Norris and the copper have a big tub each (back to square one nearly). How can I prevent this from happening? They're both fed daily so she can't be starving.
I don't want to keep her separate forever as she's beautiful and I don't want to get rid of her as I'd hate to give her to someone who ends up not knowing what they're doing.
Secondly, I obviously know how to heal a leg.. but if this one is broken or whatever he'll be left with no fully functioning legs. ? I wish she'd have bitten it clean off so it could regrow.. ? will he be okay with no great legs?
